Washington Is About to Get Schooled

After Labor Day, Congress went back to work or at least they went back to their offices. Whether they did any real work is debatable but at least they showed up.

And to paraphrase Woody Allen, 80% of life is showing up.

The accomplishments of the 115th Congress could fit on a postcard.

Instead of crafting solutions to the very real problems with Obamacare, a crumbling infrastructure and much needed tax relief for those expected to pay the bills for all their profligate spending, they have been busy crafting excuses for why they can’t do anything.

Then on Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Trump had decided to end the unconstitutional DACA program put in place by President Obama that was aimed at protecting from deportation young people who were brought to this country as children by their illegal immigrant parents.

Immediately the political class of Washington together with the mainstream media, the panels of pusillanimous pundits on cable, the cheap labor advocates at the Chamber of Commerce and the parasitic rent seekers of K Street looking to profit from government largesse sprung into action.

It was especially galling to hear Congress as they rushed to the microphones and cameras to declare their unwavering support for the so-called “dreamers” and vowing to work in a bipartisan way to ensure they get to stay in America.

I wish they would show the same support for the many native born “dreamers” who reside in crime and gang infested neighborhoods in Chicago or the hills of Appalachia or the small towns that have been devastated by a changing economy.

The crying and the wailing could be heard from coast to coast and extended to politicians of all stripes everywhere as they demanded that something be done to save these young people from the cold heartless Trump and his racist, xenophobic followers who was preparing to ship them off to places they don’t even know.

And then President Trump shocked Washington again when he cut a deal with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi on a three month delay on the debt ceiling and other budget issues so as to get some immediate relief to those whose lives have been uprooted by Hurricane Harvey and soon Hurricane Irma.

Trump was not going to sit back and listen to the cackling hens of Congress argue back and forth while people were suffering. He acted decisively.

House Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell were caught completely off-guard and while they passed the package on Friday they clearly were not happy about having to do so on the Democrat’s terms.

But on both of these issues Trump put the problems squarely where they belong-right in the laps of Congress.

If they want to save DACA, they have six months to come up with a solution before it is ended for good. And they now have three months to come up with an answer to the perennial problem of the debt ceiling.

And if that’s not enough the American people want and deserve tax relief.

Politically both Democrats and Republicans don’t know what to make of what just happened.

The RINO Republicans and Never Trumpers believe that this proves what they have said all along.

Trump is not a real conservative who adheres to conservative principles.

But the terms principles and politicians should never be used in the same sentence.

And the Antifa and Resistance Democrats think they have a glimmer of hope that they can get what they want and that Trump will cave to their every demand.

As usual both of them are dead wrong.

While they are playing their partisan games President Trump just sent probably the most powerful message of his young presidency.

He was elected by folks who are dog tired of all the bluff and bluster and bull crap that is modern day Washington and its suburbs that are filled with overpaid bureaucrats, millionaire lobbyists and consultants whose only reason for existence is to protect their ability to earn big money gumming up the governmental works at the expense of those who pay the bills.

And he is going to be their president not the president of the oligarchy who for once are as fearful for their futures as many Americans have been for theirs for much too long.

So while the DC Republicans and Democrats aided by the clueless media try to decipher whose side Trump is on, deep down the people know whose side he is on.

He is on their side.

And that is what scares Washington the most.

So here is your Cowboy Wisdom for the Week and it comes from a David Brinkley an old fashioned journalist from another era who knew a thing or two about Washington.

“Washington is a city filled with people who believe they are important”.

And while the self-important people in Washington continue to talk and not act nothing will get done for the people.

But the real important people in this country are wide awake and they have reached the limit of their patience with the politicians and their empty promises.

The first eight months of his White House tenure were a learning experience for President Trump but as politically painful as they were, he learned the lessons of Washington well.

The preliminary bouts are over. Now it’s time for the main event.

And its Washington’s turn to get schooled.
